Letter: With cougars around, she won’t feed deer

To the Editor:

Saturday morning, April 8, I found the remains of a deer about 25 feet from my house in a field. I was told that it most likely was from a fresh cougar kill, as it would have taken a large predator to carry it and dismantle it like it was. Two years ago in April, I found cougar tracks on my front porch in the snow, obviously looking in my bay window before daylight.

As much as I have enjoyed the presence of deer nearby, I realize that the concerns of Prairie City leaders about feeding the deer in town are valid. I am removing the deer block and hoping that when the snow gets deep, I don’t get tempted to put out feed again, but hope they will migrate to safer places lower in the valley.

I live at the northeast end of Prairie City, but was told that there have recently been other kills and reports of cougars here. I only hope something is done before a child gets taken, and I am sure pets are at risk.
