Grant Union/Prairie City softball continues winning streak

JOHN DAY — The Grant Union/Prairie City Lady Prospector softball team just keeps on winning.

Last year’s state runners-up won four games this past week to push their record to 22-1 on the season. The games were played on Tuesday, May 9, and Wednesday, May 10, along with a road doubleheader on Friday, May 12.

The first game was a dominant 14-3 league win over Union/Cove on Tuesday, May 9. The Lady Pros were in control from the beginning, putting a pair of runs on the board to take a 2-0 lead early in the first.

The Lady Bobcats would add a run in the bottom of the second to bring the game to 2-1, but the Lady Pros would add to their lead in the fourth, scoring six runs in the inning to go up 8-1 headed into the fifth. Another two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh ended any hope of a Lady Bobcat rally.

Halle Parsons, Raney Anderson and Sivanna Hodge all ended the day with a pair of RBIs for the Lady Pros. Parsons picked up the win, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out four batters in six innings of work.

The Lady Pros welcomed the Lady Vikings of Vale to John Day on Wednesday, May 10, and sent them home the victims of a 6-1 loss.

Vale scored their only run in the first inning. From there it was all Lady Pros, who jumped ahead 2-1 in the second and never looked back.

Another run in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth brought the Lady Pro lead to 6-1 headed into the seventh inning. The Lady Pros would hold the Lady Vikings scoreless in the top of the seventh to cap the 6-1 win.

Hodge and Laken McKay paced the Lady Pros offensively against the Lady Vikings. Both finished 1-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Drew Williams got the win for the Lady Pros, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out 10 batters.

Grant Union/Prairie City found themselves on the road for their last games of the week. The squad headed to Irrigon to battle the Lady Knights, coming home with a pair of lopsided, 18-0 wins.

Both games ended after the third inning. The box scores were almost identical, with the Lady Pros scoring 10, five and three runs in each inning. The difference in the games is when those runs were scored.

The Lady Pros got off to a fast start in both contests, scoring five runs in the first inning of game one and 10 runs to open Game 2. The score lines were again flipped in the second inning with the Lady Pros scoring 10 runs in the second inning of Game 1 and five in the second inning of Game 2.

The team scored three runs in the third inning of both games to get to the 18-0 final score.

Addy Northway led the Lady Pros on offense throughout both games, finishing the doubleheader with seven RBIs across the two-game set. Right behind Northway was Parsons, who finished the pair of games with six RBIs.

Parsons got the win in the first game for the Lady Pros, pitching all three innings and surrendering no runs while striking out four batters. Lilly Rockhill got the win for the Lady Pros in Game 2, surrendering two hits while striking out four batters.

The slate of wins put the Lady Pros at 22-1 on the season with a perfect 18-0 league mark. The team was slated to be in action next on Tuesday, May 16, when they welcome Pendleton to town. The game has a 4 p.m. start time.
