Prospector track to send nine to state

HERMISTON — The Grant Union Prospector track team qualified nine competitors for the state meet across a variety of events following the 2A Special District 4 championship meet at Kennison Field in Hermiston on Saturday, May 20.

The Lady Pros finished the meet in fifth place with 50 team points. The girls squad produced Grant Union’s only individual district champions in Mallory Lusco and Heidi Jackson.
Lusco won the district championship in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 5.75 inches. Jackson claimed the district title in pole vault with a jump of 6 feet, 10 inches.
The team also had a pair of runners-up in Lusco and Aaliyah Judd. Lusco finished second in discus with a throw of 92 feet, 6 inches, and Judd was listed as runner-up in the pole vault to Jackson with an identical 6-foot, 10-inch jump.

The boys were led by a trio of second-place finishes in the 4X400 relay, javelin and pole vault. The 4X400 relay team of Alex Finley, Landon and Skylor Boyd and Brady Dole took runner-up honors with a time of 3:40.27.
Riddick Hutchison’s javelin throw of 142 feet, 6 inches was good enough for second at the district meet. Quinn Larson nabbed second in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, 10 inches.
Landon Boyd also qualified for the state meet in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 44.13 seconds.
The boys finished the district meet in sixth place with 56 team points. Fifth-place Culver ended the day with 64.5 team points and fourth-place Stanfield/Echo had 74 team points when all was said and done. Eventual champion Weston-McEwen was the only boys team to break the century mark, finishing with 167.5 team points at the meet.
The Grant Union qualifiers will make their way to Hayward Field in Eugene for the OSAA 2A state championships to be held on Thursday, May 25, and Friday, May 26. Schedule is to be determined.
