Grant Union/Prairie City baseball players nab all-state honors

The Grant Union/Prairie City baseball team congratulates Talon VanCleave after his two-run home run against Vernonia in the opening round of the OSAA 2A baseball tournament on Tuesday, May 22, 2023 at Malone Field in John Day.

JOHN DAY — The Grant Union/Prairie City baseball team finished the 2023 campaign with a trio of players named to the OSAA 2A all-state baseball team following the conclusion of the state playoffs.

Talon VanCleave garnered second team all-state honors as a catcher and as an infielder. Sheldon Lenz, who pitches for the Pros, found his way onto the second team as well.

Rounding out the Pros’ selections to the all-state team is Ryland Beil, who adds an all-state honorable mention to his first team all-league honors as an outfielder.

The Grant Union/Prairie City baseball team finished the season with a 19-6 overall record coupled with a 10-2 league record. The team defeated Vernonia 3-2 in the opening round of the Class 2A state baseball playoffs before falling to eventual state runners-up Blanchet Catholic 3-0 in the second round of the state tournament.
