MT. VERNON — Saturday, Aug. 19, will be spent honoring Grant County veterans, courtesy of the Grant County Piecemakers Quilt Guild.

The day will start will a barbecue at Clyde Holliday State Park just outside Mt. Vernon. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. with veterans eating for free and non-veterans paying $8 for the meal.

The quilt guild will then honor 25-30 veterans with homemade quilts in a ceremony that is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.

The Piecemakers first held their quilt giveaway in 2018 and have done so every year except 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year’s event drew more than 100 people, and 26 quilts were given away to area veterans.

The giveaway is held in conjunction with the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which partners with quilting groups across the country.

Since the foundation’s beginnings in 2003, more than 300,000 Quilts of Valor have been given away to the nation’s veterans, according to the foundation’s website.

The event’s sponsor is the Grant County Veteran Services Office. For more information about the event, call 541-620-0120 or email gcpiecemakers@gmail.com.
