JOHN DAY — All the professional rodeo athletes you see on ESPN had to start somewhere. Chances are a lot of them got their start at a county youth rodeo.

This year’s Grant County Junior Rodeo, held on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Grant County Fairgrounds, is one such event. Scores of youths from all across Eastern Oregon made their way to Iron Triangle Arena to showcase their skills, perhaps on their way to rodeo stardom.

The youth rodeo featured peewee contestants aged 3-6 all the way up to senior competitors, who are high school-aged. The peewee contestants competed in woolly bullies (mutton busting), calf and mini-bronc riding, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tail tying and dummy roping.

Junior and senior-aged youth saw calf and steer riding replace mutton busting and competed in breakaway roping. There were 13 events in total at the junior rodeo, with most events having at least 10 competitors spread out across all applicable age divisions.

All-around honors in the peewee division went to Kinsley Schlaich, who amassed 36 total points, edging out the second-place finisher by a mere half-point. All-around honors in the youth division were claimed by Lila Marie Greene, who also edged out the second-place finisher by half a point. The junior division’s all-around honors went to Kynzee Eickmann, who had the most dominant all-around win with five points separating her from the second-place finisher. Shelby Peasley garnered all-around honors in the senior division, edging out second-place Molly Davis by two points.
