CANYON CITY — Austen Titus, 31, of Prairie City, has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of arson resulting from fires that charred a home and two vehicles in Prairie City on Aug. 19.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, the John Day Fire Department and Prairie City Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire on 364 N. McHaley Street in Prairie City at 10:35 p.m. on Aug. 19.

“It could have been much worse, and the Prairie City Fire Department did a phenomenal job (putting out the fire),” McKinley said.

In addition to the home, also damaged or destroyed by fire were a Toyota Camry and an ATV, according to Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley.

No one was hurt in the fires.

Titus was indicted by a grand jury on Friday, Aug. 25, on one count of arson in the first degree and one count of arson in the second degree. Both charges are felonies.

Titus was among three people involved in a single-vehicle rollover on Strawberry Road south of Prairie City on Aug. 14, suffering minor injuries in the crash. The driver, a woman named Brittany West, died as a result of her injuries after being transported to a hospital in Bend, McKinley said.

Grant County sheriff’s deputies, Oregon state troopers, and medical personnel from Prairie City and John Day responded to the crash at about 4:30 p.m. after a 911 call reporting the accident.

A 1999 Chevrolet Suburban driven by West, 35, of Prairie City, was traveling south on Strawberry Road when it rolled multiple times. West and a passenger, Christopher Boyer, 34, also of Prairie City, were ejected from the vehicle, according to the sheriff.

Titus was not thrown out of the vehicle and was able to get out on his own, McKinley said.

All three were transported to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day. Titus and Boyer were treated and released. West had sustained significant injuries and was flown to St. Charles in Bend by AirLink helicopter.

Speed and intoxicants appeared to have been factors in the crash, according to the sheriff. No other persons were harmed in the crash.

The Prairie City home that burned in the arson fire was the residence of Ronald Salazar, who was married to West, according to McKinley.
