Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc Both DQ’d From U.S. Grand Prix

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton had his second place finished in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday erased after a post-race inspection.

A report from ESPN after the race noted that both Hamilton’s Mercedes and Leclerc’s Ferrari teams were summoned by stewards for an alleged non-compliance with their cars.

Late on Sunday night, both drivers’ disqualifications were confirmed by reporters.

The result is especially disappointing for Hamilton, whose P2 finish tied his best result of the year. While Hamilton was able to celebrate on the podium after the race, his disqualification will take the finish off the history books.

One benefactor of the double disqualification was Williams driver Logan Sargeant. With Hamilton and Leclerc taken out of the final standings, Sargeant, the only American driver currently on the grid, was bumped up from 12th to 10th, scoring the first points of his Formula 1 career.

He’s the first American driver to score points in F1 in 30 years.
