JOHN DAY — A John Day man has been indicted on multiple charges that include encouraging sex abuse, online corruption of a child, and sodomy in the third degree for engaging in conduct involving a minor.
Christopher Lee Gibson, 45, of John Day, was arrested after a preliminary investigation took place Monday, Oct. 30, Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley said in a news release. Gibson was arraigned on the 30-count indictment in Grant County Circuit Court on Monday, Nov. 6.
Gibson is accused of having engaged in sexual conduct with a male minor, having filmed and photographed that conduct, and having disseminated those photos and recordings, according to court records.
Specifically, Gibson is charged with five felony counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, five felony counts of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree, five felony counts of online sexual corruption of a child in the first degree, five felony counts of sodomy in the third degree, five misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse in the third degree and five misdemeanor counts of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.
One of the charges against Gibson, using a child in a display of sexually explicit behavior, is a Measure 11 offense that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and 10 months in prison on conviction.
Gibson’s next scheduled court appearance is a status hearing on Nov. 20. A plea hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11.
McKinley said he encourages parents to be involved in their children’s online social lives and monitor their activity, as well as track their internet use.
“It is not intrusion, it is protecting, caring and teaching,” McKinley said.
Gibson is being held at the Grant County Jail on $100,000 bail. Gibson also has warrants for his arrest out of Crook County and Idaho.
If released on bail, Gibson is ordered to not have any contact with minors or the victim and his family.
