Grant County Wrestling Club shows out at home match

- The Grant County Wrestling Club’s Cody Sordoff controls a Pendleton wrestler with a front face lock at the ORWAY Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Grant Union Junior/Senior High School. Sordoff placed second in the 71-80 pound weight class among 13-, 14- and 15-year-olds.
JOHN DAY — The Grant County Wrestling Club’s 45 members demonstrated that the future of Grant County wrestling is bright as they won their home tournament on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Grant Union High School.
All told, the club tallied an impressive 50 pins on the day with 14 first place finishers, 12 runners-up and 11 third place finishers. Wyatt Hansen led the way for the Grant County Wrestling Club on the day, winning four matches, all by pinfall.
Braydon Helmricks finished with three victories, all by pinfall, as did Gene and Jack Fisher. Gavin Clarry was the last of those who finished with more than two pins for the club, registering three wins, all by pinfall.
Ginny Clarry and Tylee Courtney led the girls with a pair of pinfall wins each. Clarry and Courtney also notched pinfall victories on the boys side of the competition, with Clarry recording a pair of pins and Courtney pinning one in the boys field.
Gage Tremblay didn’t wrestle in the Grant County Wrestling tournament but did represent the club at a tournament in Echo, the ORWAY Cougar Challenge, on the same day. Tremblay left Echo with a first place finish, winning three matches while recording a pair of pins.
The Grant County Wrestling Club held off the Baker Mat Club for first place overall at the Grant County Wrestling Tournament, finishing with 43 team points to the Baker Mat Club’s 41. The Baker City YMCA Wrestling Club finished third with 41 team points.
Fourth place went to the Union Mat Club, which scored five team points. Team Extreme finished in fifth place with two points and the Pendleton Wrestling Club rounded out the scoring, finishing with one team point. Wrestlers not affiliated with any club scored three team points at the tournament.
The Grant County Wrestling Club is a freestyle wrestling club open to girls and boys who from 5 to 15 years old. The club is led by co-head coaches Justin Clarry and Daniel Tremblay.
The Grant County Wrestling Tournament was the Grant County Wrestling Club’s only home tournament of the season.
