Brief power outage hits John Day district

JOHN DAY — Residents and businesses experienced a power outage in John Day, Canyon City, Prairie City and Bates for about 10 minutes shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29.

A spokesman for the Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative said the outage resulted from a loss of supply. OTEC distributes power from other sources, such as the Bonneville Power Administration and Idaho Power, although it was unclear where the supply loss originated from, said OTEC spokesman Shane Stenquist.

“It was a transmission (issue),” Stenquist said. “It was basically a loss of supply. There’s a lot of supply in the John Day district that is not on OTEC. Our transmission lines come from Bonneville Power and Idaho Power. We do distribution. We are not (a) power (generator). When we lose generation from the supply line, there’s nothing we can do other than reroute.”

Stenquist said the power company did not expect any other issues after the afternoon outage.
