Station 62, which has been a Canyon City mainstay since 2014 for coffee lovers and people looking to buy clothes and gifts, has a new owner.
Debby McClellan, of John Day, has acquired the coffee and gift shop from previous owner Debi Hueckman, who opened Station 62 in 2014. McClellan’s first day as owner was Nov. 10.
McClellan, a licensed financial representative for Northwestern Mutual and an independent insurance agent in John Day, had been a regular customer for years until she learned of the sale opportunity via word of mouth and determined it would be a good investment.
“I needed a good business opportunity,” McClellan said. “It’s an existing, profitable business and I just decided to invest for my family’s future for the long term.”
The shop, just across Canyon Boulevard from the Grant County Courthouse, has been known as a place for a variety of coffee drinks, smoothies and baked goods. In addition, Station 62 has a wide assortment of consignment clothing, home goods, decor and gifts.
Christmas music streams from the shop’s speaker system as regular customers stream in to shop and get coffee or an infused Red Bull drink.
“We’ve got pillows, we’ve got blankets, we’ve got bedsheets, we’ve got kitchen stuff,” McClellan said. “It’s home goods and children’s items.”
The Cut Above hair salon also rents space behind the main floor space.
Station 62 sells items made by local artisans who make homemade cards, gift baskets, candles, jewelry, body butters, soaps, and bath salts.
McClellan said her goals include adding another table to create more of a social gathering space inside, as well as expanding the clothing selection.
“We are trying to get some more men’s stuff because we don’t have a lot of men’s stuff,” she said.
The “Station” part of Station 62 refers to the fact that the building had been a gas station and auto repair shop in the early 1950s. Before reopening as Station 62 in 2014, the building was Red’s Electric and, prior to that, it was Tillman Zinn’s Auto Repair.
“62” refers to the year gold was discovered in Canyon City: 1862.
Hueckman told the Eagle in 2014 she wanted to make Station 62 “a fun, positive place where you can bring friends and family, or visitors from out of town.”
Hueckman, a John Day resident, said part of the reason for selling the business was to spend more time with her family. Hueckman says she will continue to be a regular Station 62 customer.
“I’m ready to slow down, and I’m just happy that someone who is local got it and I look forward to them having success,” she said. “I’m ready to just sit back.”
