PRAIRIE CITY — Sheldon Lenz and Baryn Huerta combined for 48 of Grant Union’s 84 points to power the Prospectors to a 24-point win over Adrian during the second day of the 13 Mile Shootout, a four-team round robin event that saw the two Grant County boys and girls basketball teams take turns playing Adrian and Imbler on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16, at Grant Union and Prairie City High Schools.
Despite Lenz’s 13 first quarter points, the Antelopes looked to be in control in the first half, going on a 6-1 run to take a 28-20 lead and force a Grant Union timeout with 5:30 left before intermission. Sparked by a Talon Van Cleave three-pointer following the timeout, the Pros would embark on a 16-4 run through the remainder of the second quarter to flip the scoreboard and take a 36-32 lead into halftime.
The Pros came out hot on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball to start the second half, increasing their lead to 42-35. Adrian would recover, however, drawing to within three at 45-42 with 3:52 left in the third quarter.
The Pros would respond by ratcheting up their defensive pressure to head into the fourth quarter with all the momentum and a 60-46 advantage.
Baryn Huerta was huge for the Pros in the fourth quarter, hitting three of his six shots from behind the arc and finishing with 11 points in the period. Huerta shut the door on a potential Antelope comeback, hitting consecutive threes to give the Pros a 76-55 lead with just over 4:00 left to play.
The Pros would go on to outscore the Antelopes 6-3 over the final four minutes of the game for an 82-58 win and a 2-0 record in the 13 Mile Shootout. The Pros edged out Imbler 45-42 during the first day of the 13 Mile Shootout on Friday, Dec. 15, at Grant Union High School.
Sheldon Lenz was the top scorer for the Pros against Adrian, finishing with a game-high 27 points. Right on Lenz’s heels was Huerta, who finished the day with 21 points. Van Cleave rounded out the top scorers for Grant Union, finishing with 11 points, six of which came in the third quarter of play.
The wins push the 11th-ranked Prospectors to 6-3 on the season prior to the start of Blue Mountain Conference play. The Pros will look to keep their momentum going when they welcome Union to Grant Union High School for a non-league game on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
