Dayville/Monument boys still seeking first win

The Dayville/Monument Tiger boys basketball team played three games over three days from last week and are still looking for their first win of the season.

The Class 1A Tigers ventured out to John Day to take on 2A Grant Union’s junior varsity squad on Thursday, Dec. 14, falling 48-31. The next day, the Tigers welcomed the Huntington Locomotives to Dayville, suffering a 51-35 defeat in front of their home crowd.

Dayville/Monument hit the road for their final game of the three-day stretch, making the trip out to Wheeler County for a matchup with Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler at Spray High School on Saturday, Dec. 16. The Tigers would suffer a dominant 72-24 defeat that left them 0-3 during the three-day stretch of games.

The Tigers are now 0-7 on the season without having yet played a league game. Dayville/Monument will look to get into the win column when they travel to take on Ione/Arlington a mere three days after Christmas on Thursday, Dec. 28.

Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Ione High School.

Lady Tigers get into the win column

The Dayville/Monument girls basketball team picked up their first two wins of the season, going 2-1 from Thursday, Dec. 14, to Saturday, Dec. 16.

The 1A Lady Tigers took on the 2A Grant Union girls junior varsity squad on Thursday and left John Day with a convincing 46-22 victory for their first win of the season. On Friday the team played host to the Lady Locomotives of Huntington, losing a close 35-25 contest.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Spray High School to take on Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler on Saturday in their third game in three days, eking out a close 41-40 win for their second win of the season.

The Lady Tigers are now 2-5 overall and will look to keep their momentum going when they take on Ione/Arlington on Thursday, Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Ione High School.

Mountaineers drop two straight

The Long Creek basketball team played a pair of games on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16, dropping both to fall two games below .500 on the season.

The Mountaineers played Adrian’s junior varsity team, losing 64-40 to the Antelopes on Friday in Adrian. The following day the team hosted Four Rivers out of Ontario, losing 65-48.

The pair of losses put the Mountaineers at 2-4 on the season with an 0-1 record in league play. Long Creek will look to get back to .500 when they travel to Baker for a pair of games in the Eastern Oregon Holiday Crossover on Wednesday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 29.

Their first game against Pilot Rock is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday at Baker High School. Their second game, a rematch with Four Rivers, tips off at 1 p.m. on Friday at Baker High School.

Grant Union/Prairie City boys place eight in Elgin

The Grant Union/Prairie City boys wrestling team had eight wrestlers who placed sixth or better and finished in sixth place overall in the Elgin Memorial Classic at Elgin High School on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16.

Top finisher for the Pros was defending state champion Taylor Parsons, who won the 132 pound weight class, winning all four of his matches by pinfall in 1:30 or less. Jarett Waddel logged a second place finish for the Pros at 138 pounds, losing to Nyssa’s William Savage via pinfall in the championship match.

The Pros had a trio of fourth place finishers in Ryan Combs (165), Mason Benge (175) and Bryan Camacho (175b). Frankie Bean finished in fifth place for the Pros at 113 pounds, and Alex Finley and Zack Ostberg brought home sixth place finishes for the Pros.

As a team, the Pros racked up 101 team points to finish sixth overall. Champion Enterprise finished the tournament with 207 team points, with just a single point separating second place La Grande (150) and third place Weiser (149). The Pros finished just ahead of Baker, which took seventh place with 99 team points.

The boys team will be in action next when they travel to Burns for a tournament on Friday, Dec. 29. Start time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Grant Union girls crown two wrestling champs in Elgin

The Grant Union girls wrestling team left the Elgin Memorial Classic in third place overall while crowning two individual champions over the course of the two-day tournament on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16, at Elgin High School.

The Lady Pros had six individual placers overall, with JoLee Oakes and Mallory Lusco taking home first place honors in the 120 pound and 235 pound weight classes. Zoey Bean and Sivanna Hodge brought home second place finishes for the Lady Pros in the 120 pound and 235 pound weight classes.

Bailey Reeves was the lone third place finisher for the Lady Pros, winning her 135 pound consolation final against Nyssa’s Angelina Santana by fall. Quinlan Taylor and Laramie Kiser both left Elgin with fourth place finishes at 120 pounds and 155 pounds respectively.

The Lady Pros scored 46 team points, good enough for third place. The Lady Pros just edged Four Rivers, which finished with 45 team points for third place honors. Tournament champion Nyssa finished with 62 team points, just beating out second place Weiser, which finished with 61 team points.

The Lady Pros will hit the mats next when they travel to Burns along with the boys team for a tournament on Friday, Dec. 29. Start time is also scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
