JOHN DAY — The Grant Union girls basketball team gave their best effort but came up well short of securing their second win of the season, falling 54-20 to the Enterprise Lady Outlaws on Friday, Jan. 5, at Grant Union High School.

The Lady Outlaws struck first, taking an early 5-2 lead with 6:09 left in the first following a pair of made free throws. Turnovers would hamper the Lady Prospectors and Enterprise would convert those turnovers into points, taking a 15-2 lead with 4:00 left in the first quarter to force a Lady Pro timeout.

The Lady Pros would trail 19-7 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter would see the Lady Outlaws continue to score, increasing their lead to 24-9 with 5:40 left in the half. Enterprise would keep the pressure on, outscoring the Lady Pros 8-3 through the remainder of the first half to take a 32-12 lead into the break.

Enterprise would come out in the second half and continue to apply pressure, scoring the half’s first 12 points to go up 44-12. The Lady Pros would get their first field goal of the second half with 3:24 left in the third quarter to trail 44-14.

Grant Union would add another field goal in the third quarter but would still face a daunting 48-16 deficit headed into the fourth.

Scoring for both teams was hard to come by in the forth quarter, with the Lady Pro defense holding the Lady Outlaws to a mere six points. The Grant Union offense couldn’t capitalize, however, managing just four points in the fourth as the team fell 54-20.

Leading the Lady Pros on offense was Rillie Mitchell, who finished with nine points on the night. Gracee Hueckman added four points, and three other Lady Pros finished with two points in the game.

Grant Union coach Jason Miller acknowledged that turnovers are hampering his team’s ability to score. That said, Miller noted that the players continue to work hard and build their skill sets.

“We are building ball handling skills, passing skills and confidence,” he said. “Experience will help as well.”

“The girls are making progress and continue to work hard,” Miller added.

The loss leaves the Lady Pros at 1-13 on the season with an 0-2 league mark. The Lady Pros will look to add their second win of the season on Friday, Jan. 12, when they welcome Stanfield to town for a league matchup.

Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
