From the editor’s desk: Ready or not, 2024 is here

Published 9:15 am Monday, January 8, 2024

Well, 2024 is upon us, and the news cycle is revving up again after the traditional holiday lull. Coming up in this week’s edition of the Eagle, look for a profile of Grant County business owner Sandie Gilson, one of the leaders of the Greater Idaho movement. We’re also pursuing an interview with new John Day City Manager Melissa Bethel, though at last report she had lost her voice in her first day on the job and wasn’t able to say much. We will also have stories on newly announced candidates for county judge and justice of the peace, the outcome of the Shannon Adair ethics complaint, plans for the transition to a new county clerk and more.

In case you missed it, last week’s paper featured our Photos of the Year for 2023, a look back at the Year in Sports, and stories on John Day’s pullout from R3, a rare bird sighting, a lethal take authorization for two wolves and the New Year’s Eve fireworks show in Prairie City
