Prairie City/Burnt River boys win two straightThe Prairie City/Burnt River boys basketball team won a pair of games last week to snap an eight-game losing streak.
The Panthers got their first win in eight games at Adrian, downing the Antelopes 53-50 on Friday, Jan. 5. The win avenges a 10-point loss the Panthers suffered to the Antelopes during the 13 Mile Shootout in mid-December.
The Panthers kept the momentum going the next day, notching another slim victory, this time a 52-50 win over the Mustangs of Jordan Valley in front of their home crowd. The game was the first and only matchup of the teams during the 2023-24 season.
The Panthers have now won two games in a row for the first time since a three-game wining streak Dec. 1-8. The Panthers are now 5-9 on the season without having played a league game.
The Panthers will look to tie their longest win streak of the season when they welcome Huntington to Prairie City High School on Friday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Panther girls fall below .500 following lossesThe Prairie City/Burnt River girls basketball team dropped a pair of games last week to end a four-game winning streak and fall below .500 on the season.
The Lady Panthers traveled to Adrian for a matchup with the Lady Antelopes on Friday, Jan. 5. Despite playing the Lady Antelopes better than the 18-point defeat that was the result of their first meeting, the Lady Panthers still didn’t have enough to get past Adrian as they fell 41-35.
The next day the Lady Panthers hosted fifth-ranked Jordan Valley, falling 41-28. The loss left the Lady Panthers at 6-8 on the season.
The Prairie City/Burnt River girls will look to get back into the win column on Friday, Jan. 12, when they host Huntington for a non-league game. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Long Creek win pair, sit at .500 on the seasonThe Long Creek Mountaineer basketball team won a pair of games to push their season-long winning streak to three while improving to .500 on the year.
The Mountaineers went on the road to play Griswold’s JV team on Friday, Jan. 5, leaving that game with a dominant 54-21 win. The victory matched the Mountaineers’ longest winning streak of the season at two games.
The next day the Mountaineers would travel to Harper Charter for a showdown with the Hornets, leaving that game 61-54 winners for their third straight victory. The winning streak is the longest for the Mountaineers since the 2019-20 season, which saw the team go on separate seven- and five-game winning streaks.
The team’s five wins thus far are the most Long Creek basketball has had since that 2019-20 season, when the Mountaineers finished with 13 wins. Long Creek will look to add to their winning streak when they welcome Prairie City/Burnt River’s JV team to town on Friday, Jan. 12.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Dayville/Monument boys, girls fall to CraneThe Dayville/Monument boys and girls basketball teams made their way to Crane for a set of games on Friday, Jan. 5, dropping both to the top-ranked boys and girls teams in 1A basketball.
The Tiger girls squared off against the Lady Mustangs in the early game, falling 73-12 in their first league contest of the season. The loss puts the Lady Tigers at 3-9 on the year with an 0-1 league mark.
The Tiger boys faced off with the Mustangs in the nightcap, falling 85-26. The Dayville/Monument boys are now at 1-11 on the season with an 0-1 league mark.
The future doesn’t get any easier for the Dayville/Monument basketball teams as they’ll again play top-ranked Crane on Thursday, Jan. 11, at Dayville High School. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. for the girls game and 7:30 p.m. for the boys game.
Grant Union splits with HeppnerThe Grant Union boys and girls basketball teams played their second league games of the season when they traveled to Heppner on Saturday, Jan. 6, earning a split with the Mustangs.
The Grant Union girls played the Lady Mustangs in the opener and fell 53-22. The loss leaves the Lady Prospectors at 1-13 and still seeking their first win in over a month.
The Grant Union boys would earn a victory in the late game, downing Heppner 52-47. The Pros now stand at 10-4 on the season with a 2-0 league record.
Both teams will be looking for a win when Stanfield comes to town for a league showdown on Friday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.
