Silvies names new golf director
SENECA — The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch, a luxury guest ranch and destination resort located in Seneca, has picked Kelly Horen as the resort’s new director of golf, management announced.
Horen will be overseeing operations at each of Silvies’ six golf courses: the reversible Craddock & Hankins, Claire’s Orange and Black, Chief Egan and McVeigh’s Gauntlet, the home of Silvies’ famous goat caddies.
Horen brings more than 20 years of course management and teaching experience to Silvies, most recently serving as head golf professional at Lake Shastina Golf Resort. He has also worked at the Rogue Valley Country Club as the first assistant golf professional and was the tournament director for Antelope Hills Golf Course.
OIT honors local students
KLAMATH FALLS — Several Grant County residents enrolled at the Oregon Institute of Technology have been honored for academic achievement by the school.
Carson Weaver, of Mt. Vernon, has been named to the President’s List for fall term. Weaver is studying pre-dental hygiene. To qualify for the President’s List, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.7 or better while taking at least 12 credit hours.
Two local students were named to the fall term Dean’s List at OIT, Aubreianna Osborne, of Monument, and Devon Stokes, of Mt. Vernon. Dean’s List recognition is given to students with a GPA of 3.3-3.69 who are enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours of classes.
Forest plan comments due
PORTLAND — The U.S. Forest Service is extending the comment period for its published notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement on the proposal to amend the 17 land management plans of the Northwest Forest Plan, the agency announced.
The comment period has been extended to Feb. 2, allowing additional time for the public to review and submit feedback on this initiative.

OTEC offers DC Youth Tour
BAKER CITY — Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative is now accepting applications for the 2024 District of Columbia Youth Tour from qualified high school students.
The tour runs June 16-22, according to OTEC’s DC Youth Tour webpage. Youth tour delegates will represent Oregon and meet with more than 1,800 other students from across the United States.
The youth tour offers teens the chance to visit famous historical sites, meet with Oregon’s congressional leaders and learn leadership skills. Students will also create podcasts and digital photo projects while learning about current topics in energy and climate change legislation.
This all-expenses-paid trip is open to high school juniors who attend school or are homeschooled in Baker, Grant, Harney or Union County and whose parent or guardian is a current member of OTEC.
Applications are available online and are due by 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 16.
The OTEC Board of Directors will evaluate and select applicants.
