CANYON CITY — All nine cities in Grant County will have city council seats on the ballot for the upcoming general election on Nov. 5 this year.

John Day, Granite, Dayville, Canyon City, Long Creek, Monument and Mt. Vernon each have three council seats for terms that end on Dec. 31, 2024, according to district information from the Grant County Clerk’s Office.

Prairie City has four seats up for a vote this year, while Seneca has two seats open, according to documents filed with the clerk’s office.

In some communities, the office of mayor will also be on the ballot.

Residents interested in running can begin filing candidate forms with their city on June 5, with a filing deadline of Aug. 27. The deadline for candidate withdrawal is Aug. 30.

A filing form, called the SEL101, is available from the Grant County Clerk’s Office at 201 S. Humbolt St. in Canyon City. It’s also available online at www.oregonvotes.gov.

The filing fee for city council and mayoral candidates is set by each city’s charter or ordinance, according to the SEL101.

On the filing form, candidates are asked to provide their name, the way they would like their name to appear on the ballot, present employment or occupation, occupational background or previous employment and educational background, among other information.

The form also asks the candidate to list any prior government experience (elected or appointed).

Election filing forms and manuals are also available online at the Oregon Secretary of State Elections Division website: http://tinyurl.com/yc25xxpp.
