ELGIN — A new five-day event about choosing one’s own adventure is coming to Wallowa County as cyclists are being sought for the Cycle Oregon Road Rally in September.

“Designed with daily road and gravel route options, and base camping out of two communities, you will have plenty of on and off the bike options to create your ideal experience,” according to Cycle Oregon’s website.

The ride is now accepting early registrations at www.cycleoregon.com/ride/rally for the 198-to-298-mile event (with options) that will take cyclists from Elgin to Enterprise and back Sept. 8-13. Early registration for adults is $1,400, through May 15; $1,450, from May 16-July 31; and $1,500, from Aug. 1-29. A $700 option for nonriders who accompany a cyclist also is available.

Included in the registration cost are tent camping, meals, hot showers, nightly entertainment, bike repair, on-site medical services and on-course support such as rest stops, support-and-gear vehicles and bike mechanics. All participants need to bring is a sleeping bag, sleeping pad and pillow. Although Elgin does not have a hotel, Enterprise has some local options (early reservations are recommended).

Registration is limited to the first 600 participants who will ride a course that includes an 11,342-foot to 17,862-foot elevation gain, with options.
