- Houston coach Kelvin Sampson has never won at Kansas’s Phog Allen Fieldhouse during his career.
Following No. 4 Houston’s loss on the road, 78–65, at the hands of No. 8 Kansas on Saturday, Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson lamented the effort of his team in colorful fashion during postgame media availability.
“I told the team I was disappointed with their effort,” Sampson told the media after the game. “That’s not who we are.”
Houston trailed by as many as 20 in the second half as four Jayhawks scored in double-figures, led by senior All-American Hunter Dickinson, who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. As a team, Kansas shot 68.9% from the floor and 46.2% from three.
“Excuse my language,” Sampson said of Kansas’ hot shooting. “But they shot the piss out of it.”
In addition to the white-hot shooting from the floor, Kansas also dominated Houston on the glass to the tune of a 40–24 advantage. That didn’t sit well with Sampson either.
“We got murdered [on the glass],” he added bluntly.
Sampson has never won in his coaching career at Phog Allen Fieldhouse, as Saturday’s loss dropped him to 0–8 all-time at the venue. The defeat for Houston slid the Cougars to 19–3 on the season, and 6–3 in Big 12 play. As for Kansas, the Jayhawks improved to 18–4 and 6–3 in league play.
Both teams have lofty postseason aspirations, but Saturday was all about Kansas, who will take the momentum on the road to Manhattan against Kansas State on Monday night.
