Fight Friday morning in Hermiston turns deadly

HERMISTON — The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Hermiston man following a fight.

The sheriff’s office dispatch center Friday, Feb. 9, at approximately 6:30 a.m. received reports of a physical altercation between two men outside in the vicinity of North Highway 395 and Punkin Center Road, Hermiston. Both men suffered severe injuries, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Law enforcement and medical units rushed to the scene, and ambulances transported the men — one 51 years old and the other 27 — to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The 51-year-old, though, succumbed to his injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. The other man was receiving medical attention.

Neither man’s identity has been released by authorities.
The Oregon State Police Crime Scene Unit and Umatilla County Search and Rescue responded to the scene for processing.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies, continues its investigation into the deadly fight.
Preliminary assessments suggest this is an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public, the sheriff’s office reported.
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office also reported it would provide updates as the investigation continues.
