Prairie City T-Ball accepting registrations

PRAIRIE CITY — The month of March and occasional glimpses of spring mean only one thing: America’s pastime is fast approaching.

Prairie City is looking to get in on the action and is putting together a T-ball team for 5- to 7-year-olds who will presumably be the future of Grant County baseball and softball. Registration opened on Friday, March 1, and will remain open until March 22.

“We had a team years ago, when Grant County Little League still encompassed T-ball,” program organizer Mindy Stinnett said. “But it’s been a lot of years, so this is just trying to regenerate a team up here so Prairie kids who may not be able to travel to John Day are able to participate in that as well.”

The season will begin on Apr. 29 and run until May 31. There is no set cost to participate in the program. Instead, organizers are asking families to make a donation.

Sponsorships from a pair of local businesses, Strux Engineering and Winegar Excavating, will mitigate any cost barriers potential participants may have.

“It is a pretty expensive startup cost, so we are accepting any donations that a family feels inclined to make,” Stinnett said.

The program will be separate from John Day’s youth programs but may cross paths with other T-ball programs in Grant County.

“We’re still figuring out the details of scheduling, but we hope to be able to play the Parks and Rec teams, and then Dayville has a T-ball team as well,” Stinnett said.

Those who are interested can sign up in the office at Prairie City School, 740 Overholt Ave. in Prairie City. Interested parties can also contact Stinnett at 541-620-4480.
