ANTHONY LAKES — Snow keeps falling at Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort and that’s good news for a pair of races coming up soon.
Broadway Blast
The 29th annual Broadway Blast, set for March 16-17, is a fundraiser for the Anthony Lakes Ski Racing Association.
After dwindling to less than 10 racers several years ago, the current ALSRA team has 47 members from age 6 to 18, said Luke Brown, ALSRA head coach.
The team is also selling raffle tickets for a chance to win four prizes: one-half of a grassfed certified red angus beef; two quarter beef portions; or a 2024-2025 season pass to Anthony Lakes.
Raffle tickets are available from ALSRA members, and the drawing will be held March 17.
Brown said the Broadway Blast is one of the only downhill races still happening at ski resorts.
“It used to be every mountain had them,” he said.
The event includes races for downhill and Nordic, and a long jump competition. It is open to everyone age 6 and older.
“Last year we had parents racing kids,” said Chelsea Judy, marketing director at Anthony Lakes.
Brown said the race generally draws 70 to 100 competitors. Entry is $15 per event.
Pre-registration is preferred at anthonylakesskirace.org/home. Click on “Races.”
Starbottle Throttle
The second-annual Starbottle Throttle banked slalom is happening April 6 at Anthony Lakes.
Previously called the Schuss Alley Banked Slalom, the Starbottle Throttle will again be held on Schuss Alley and open to skiers, snowboarders and tele skiers.
Pre-registration is recommended at anthonylakes.com. Hover over “Winter” and click on the link for the race. Entry is $35 in advance, or $40 on race day.
Those who register before March 5 will receive a shirt. Entry is limited to 100 participants.
There will be race age categories for skiers and snowboarders: 12 and under; ages 13-17; ages 18-39; age 40 and older and pro open. Tele ski is open to all ages.
Judy said a crew will hand build the banked walls needed for the race on Schuss Alley, which can be easily seen from the lodge.
“As a competitor it’s fun to test your skills in speed and control. It’s just fun,” she said.
The Starbottle Throttle is dedicated to Ron Evans, a regular at Anthony Lakes who passed away July 14 at the age of 62.
“Everyone knew him up here,” Judy said.
