Pros play four in Arizona

The Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument Prospector baseball team played four games against teams from both Oregon and Arizona in the Coach Bob National Invitational in Arizona from Monday, March 25, until Wednesday, March 27, going 1-4 with a pair of single-run losses.

The Pros kicked off their play in the Coach Bob Invitational with a March 25 matchup with Shadow Mountain out of Arizona. The Pros built a 7-2 lead by the top of the fourth inning only to be outscored 7-1 throughout the remainder of the contest, falling 9-8 on the last play of the game.

The Pros played fellow Oregonains Yamhill-Carlton in the first of two games on March 26, defeating the Tigers 6-3. The Pros built a four-run lead through the first two innings and held off a Tiger rally in the second and third innings to hold the Tigers scoreless from the bottom of the fourth until the end of the game.

The Pros played another Arizona school, Apollo High School, in their second game of the day March 26. Apollo built a nine-run lead in the first two innings, leaving the Pros to play catch-up throughout the rest of the game to ultimately fall 15-4.

The final game for the Pros in Arizona came against another Oregon squad in the Umpqua Valley Christian Monarchs. The Pros scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to trail by one headed into the final inning of play but couldn’t get the tying run on base in the seventh, falling 3-2.

The slate of Arizona games leaves the Prospectors at 3-5 on the season without having played a league game thus far. The Pros will look to get back into the win column during a three-game set with Elgin, which gets underway on Tuesday, April 2, in Elgin before shifting to the Seventh Street Sports Complex in John Day for a Saturday, April 6, doubleheader.

Lady Pros win two of three during the week

The Grant Union/Prairie City Lady Prospector softball team went 2-1 in games over the past week, splitting a pair of games with Scio while securing a close win over Dayton.

The girls started the week’s games with a Friday, March 29, matchup Scio that ended in a 4-2 win. The next day, the Lady Pros matched up with Scio again, this time dropping a close 13-12 game for their first loss of the season.

The Lady Prospectors had little time to process their first loss of the season as they squared off with Dayton in the second half of a two-game set on Saturday, March 30. The Lady Pros won a close 2-1 game against Dayton to go 2-1 during the week, with all of those games decided by two runs or less.

The week leaves the second-ranked Lady Pros at 5-1 on the season. The team will be in action next on Saturday, April 6, when they host a doubleheader with Echo/Stanfield.

The first game will start at 11 a.m.
