Pros throttle ElginThe Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument Prospector baseball team played three games against Elgin over the past week and completely dismantled the Huskies, outscoring them 53-2 over the three-game set.

The first game against the Huskies was on Tuesday, April 2, in Elgin. The Pros scored 11 runs in the fourth inning on their way to closing out the Huskies 25-0 after five innings. Baryn Huerta and Kingdon Kirby both drove in four runs with Talon Van Cleave and Lukas Blood driving in three runs each.

Weston Suchorski pitched four innings in the win, giving up no runs and striking out 11 batters.

The Pros would welcome Elgin to John Day on Saturday, April 6, for a doubleheader, sending the Huskies home the victims of a 33-2 shellacking over the course of the two games.

The first game was a 15-0 Prospector win that saw the team score at least three runs in all four innings they were at bat. Ryland Beil led the way offensively for the Pros, finishing a perfect 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs.

Mason Benge picked up the win for the Pros on the mound, giving up no hits while striking out 10 batters in just over three innings of work.

The final game of the three-game series was no different from the first two, ending in an 18-2 Prospector win after five innings of play. The Pros scored opened the game hot, scoring 17 runs in the opening inning to put the Huskies in an early hole they simply couldn’t climb out of.

Van Cleave and Charley Knowles led the way for the Pros on offense, finishing the game with four RBIs each. Kirby picked up the win for the Pros, surrendering three hits and an earned run while striking out five batters in just over two innings of work.

The wins leave the Prospectors above .500 at 6-5 on the season with a 3-0 league record. The Pros are in action next at home against Weston-McEwen/Griswold on Tuesday, April 9, before heading to Athena to take on the Tigerscots in a two-game set on Saturday, April 13.

Lady Pros rough up Echo/StanfieldThe Grant Union/Prairie City Lady Prospector softball team’s offensive and defensive capabilities where on full display during a Saturday, April 6, doubleheader against Echo/Stanfield as the Lady Pros crushed the Lady Bobcats 10-0 and 17-2.

The first game saw the Lady Pros build a 7-0 lead through the first four innings to cruise to a 10-0 win that was called due to the mercy rule after the sixth inning.

Halle Parsons had a day at the plate, blasting a home run to finish with five RBIs on two hits. Reece Jacobs also brought a big bat, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Drew Williams picked up the win for the Lady Pros, striking out 10 batters while surrendering a single hit in six innings of work.

The second game saw the Lady Pros score 10 runs in the second inning en route to a convincing 17-2 mercy rule win.

Addy Northway was the leading lady for Grant Union/Prairie City on offense, finishing with five RBIs including a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning. Savannah Watterson would also go deep for the Lady Pros, belting a two-run shot in the fourth to finish 4-2 at bat with three RBIs.

Parsons picked up the win for the Lady Pros in the pitcher’s circle, surrendering two runs on four hits while striking out three batters.

The No. 1-ranked Lady Prospectors are now 8-1 on the season with a 2-0 record in league play. The Lady Pros were scheduled to host Vale on Tuesday, April 9, and will host Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa on Thursday, April 11.

Start time for the April 11 game is 4 p.m.
