JOHN DAY — The Prairie City boys golf team battled six other teams at the John Day Golf Club in a weather-impacted 18 hole golf tournament on Friday, April 12.

The team finished with an overall score of 379, with two players unable to shoot all 18 holes due to lightning. Sawyer Quinton led all finishers at the tournament, shooting a 72 on the par 71 course.

Cody Reagan and Ritter Rookstool both missed out on an 18 hole score, with Reagan shooting a 92 and Rookstool shooting a 95. Cayden Howard and Tristen Gibson rounded out the Panther varsity scorers, shooting a 120 and 130, respectively.

Overall team scores for the tournament were somewhat skewed due to the lightning. Pilot Rock shot a tournament-best 205, but two of the school’s golfers failed to log a score.

Trinity Lutheran shot 337 as a team but had four players miss at least one of the tournament’s 18 holes. Burns shot 348 while having three players fail to log a score on at least one hole.

Vale just edged out the Panthers, shooting 372 while having three players fail to log a score on at least one hole. The same scenario was true for Enterprise, which finished the tournament with a team score of 399.

Wallowa came to the tournament one player short of a full team, shooting a 449 with two players missing at least one hole.

Prairie City head golf coach Bob Quinton said his team played well despite lightning delays plaguing the tournament.

“They did well considering the conditions on Friday,” he said. “We fielded a team with three experienced players and three who had never played. Overall a very good week for the team.”

The team will be at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City twice this week, once for the district preview on Friday, April 19, starting at noon and again for a regular tournament on Monday, April 22, that gets underway at 1 p.m.
