PENDLETON — The Umatilla National Forest is looking for volunteers to serve as summer campground hosts at the Jubilee Lake, Olive Lake, North Fork John Day and Penland Lake campgrounds.

A campground host welcomes campers, provides information on the surrounding area, and generally makes campers feel at home, officials said.

“I would say that camp hosts assist and represent the agency in campground operations during the busy season,” said Curt Booher, Umatilla National Forest South Zone recreation program manager. “Hosts are the daily face of the forest in terms of delivering a clean, safe and enjoyable visit to the public.”

Hosts will visit with campers and day-use visitors, clean and maintain restrooms, restock supplies, occasionally clean up after camp, carry out minor maintenance as needed, keep an eye on things and set an example for others, according to officials.

Individuals or couples can apply to be hosts. Retirees often apply to the campground host program, officials said.

Those who apply will need to supply their own trailer, camper or motorhome. Campground hosts will be provided with a campsite, usually near the main entryway to the campground. A food allowance and propane is offered, and personal vehicle mileage associated with hosting duties is reimbursed, officials said. Applicants may be subject to a criminal background check.
