Long Creek speeds to Milton-FreewaterThe Long Creek boys and girls track teams competed against 17 other track teams from around Oregon and Washington at the Carnival of Speed at McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater on Friday, April 26, leaving with an individual top three placer and an 18th place overall finish for the boys.

Long Creek’s Pun Leadsuk led the way for the Mountaineers, tying for third place in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, six inches. Florian Tofahrn was the only other Mountaineer placer of note, finishing 19th in the 1,500 meter race with a time of 5:26.76.

Both Leadsuk and Tofahrn’s finishes were personal records. The Long Creek girls did not log a team score at the event.

The Long Creek boys and girls track teams will be in action again on Friday, May 3, when they head to Grant Union Jr./Sr. High School for the Grant Union Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Prospectors, Panthers run in ElginThe Grant Union track teams left with first- and second-place finishes at the Huskies Invite in Elgin on Friday, April 26.

Not to be outdone, the Prairie City track squads left the Invite with second-place finishes in the boys competition and a fifth-place finish in the girls competition. Host Elgin joined Huntington, Pine Eagle, Union, Grant Union and Prairie City in competing at the meet.

Individually, the Grant Union boys had a number of first-place finishers, starting with Landon Boyd, who won the 400 meter race handily with a time of 54.50 seconds. Boyd also picked up a first-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 45.47 seconds.

Grant Union’s 4×100 relay team, consisting of Garrett Ashley, Skylor Boyd, Landon Boyd and Taylor Gosnell, picked up a first-place finish with a time of 47.25 seconds.

Once the field events started, the meet quickly turned into a showcase of Alex Finley’s skills. Finley placed first in the shot put, discus and long jump.

As a team, the Grant Union boys finished with 174 team points to second-place Prairie City’s 103.

The Prairie City boys had a single event winner in Maison Teel, who won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.10. The Panther 4×100 relay team of David Sharpe, Sawyer Quinton, Maison Teel and Tucker Wright sprinted to a second-place finish with a time of 47.26 seconds.

Trey Brown placed second in the javelin and third in the shot put for the Panthers, and Cody Reagan took home second place in the discus.

Wright left Elgin with a pair of second-place finishes in the high jump and long jump, and David Sharpe finished third in the 100 meter dash.

The Grant Union girls were led by Eliza Bailey, who swept the distance races, placing first in both the 1,500 meter and 3,000 meter races. Mallory Lusco in the discus and Kiera Stiner in the high jump were the other Lady Pro first-place finishers.

Abril Deja finished second in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash for the Lady Pros. Lusco threw to a second place finish in the shot put, and Morgan Walker did the same in the discus.

Hannah McKinley was the Lady Pros’ other event runner-up, placing second in the long jump.

For the Lady Panthers, Izabella Williams was the team’s lone event winner, placing first in the javelin with a throw of 81 feet, 1 inch. Willams also placed third in the high jump and fourth in the 100 meter dash.

As a team, the Lady Pros finished second, with 134.5 team points to meet winner Elgin’s 164. Prairie City finished fifth with 42.5 team points, just behind fourth-place Pine Eagle’s 44 point haul.

Both teams will be in action next at the Grant Union Invitational on Friday, May 3. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Dayville, Monument track compete in South WascoThe Dayville and Monument track teams competed in the South Wasco Invitational on Saturday, April 27, in Maupin, getting some good experience despite not having a top four finisher at the meet.

The highest individual finisher for both teams was Monument’s Ansleigh Douglas, who finished fifth in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:50.70. Other top 10 finishers were Dayville’s Preston Fretwell, who finished eighth in the 100 meters, and Monument’s Jin Bo Ciochetti, who finished ninth in the javelin.

As a team, the Monument girls finished 11th out of 13 squads at the meet with 4 team points. Trout Lake emerged victorious on the girls side of the competition, racking up 162.66 team points.

In the boys competition, Dayville placed 13th with 7 team points. Host South Wasco County came away with the win, finishing the meet with 85 team points.

Monument will join most of the other Grant County track and field teams at the Grant Union Invitational on Friday, May 3. Dayville will spend Friday, May 3, at the Ray Uriarte Invite in Baker City.

The Grant Union Invitational is scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. on May 3, with the Ray Uriarte Invite set to start at 10 a.m.

Prospectors keep on rollingThe Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument baseball team picked up a dominant 11-1 road victory over Nyssa/Adrian on Friday, April 26, for their 10th win in their past 11 outings.

The Prospectors got on the board early, scoring a run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. A scoreless third and fourth inning set the stage for a six-run fifth inning that saw the Pros capitalize on wild pitches and fielding errors to put the game largely out of reach.

Sheldon Lenz was dominant at the plate for the Pros, surrendering a single run off two hits while striking out 12 Nyssa/Adrian batters. Kingdon Kirby did his part on offense for the Pros, leading the team with three RBIs while going 3-4 at the plate.

The Prospectors will be in action next in a three-game set against Union/Cove. The first of those games will be on Wednesday, May 1, at the Seventh Street Sports Complex in John Day, followed by a Saturday, May 4, road doubleheader.

Wednesday’s game will get underway at 1 p.m., with the doubleheader on Saturday kicking off at 1 p.m.
