Grant County track teams compete one final time before district meets

Four of the five Grant County track teams joined four other 1A and 2A teams for their final competitions before their respective district meets at the Grant Union Invitational at Grant Union Jr./Sr. High School on Friday, May 3.
The Grant Union boys would emerge victorious on their side of the competition, logging 146.5 team points to hold off second-place Enterprise, which finished with 132 team points. Prairie City placed fifth in the boys competition with 57 points, and Long Creek finished seventh with 17.5 points.
Monument’s boys team did not register a team score at the meet.
The Grant Union girls would leave the invitational as the highest-placing Grant County team on their side of the competition, finishing with 131.5 team points. Meet winner Enterprise finished with 207.5 points, and Heppner finished just ahead of the Lady Prospectors with 140 team points.
Like the boys, Prairie City’s girls also left John Day with a fifth-place finish, scoring 57.5 team points. The Monument girls finished seventh with seven points.
Long Creek’s girls team did not register a score at the meet.
Individually, the Grant Union boys were led by Landon Boyd and Alex Finley, who picked up three wins each. Boyd took home first place in the 400 meter dash and the 300 meter hurdles, while Finley earned top honors in the shot put and long jump.
Both Finley and Boyd also ran to a first-place finish in the 4×400 relay with teammates Taylor Gosnell and Skylor Boyd. Grant Union freshman Landon James came away with first place in the pole vault.
Skylor Boyd added a first-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles and second place in the 300 meter hurdles to his 4×400 relay win. Both Landon and Skylor Boyd also ran to a second-place finish in the 4×100 relay with teammates Taylor Gosnell and Garrett Ashley.
Logan Randleas and Zack Ostberg added third-place finishes for the Pros in the 3,000 meter race and shot put, respectively. The Grant Union boys nearly swept the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, with Gosnell and James placing third and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles and Skylor Boyd, Gosnell and James placing second, third and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.
The Prairie City boys were led by Tucker Wright, who took home first place in the 4×100 relay with teammates David Sharpe, Cody Reagan and Maison Teel in addition to finishing third in both the triple and long jumps.
Trey Brown was the other top-four finisher for the Panthers, throwing to a second-place finish in the shot put.
Long Creek had a pair of event winners in Florian Tofahrn and Pun Leadsuk, who tied for first place in the high jump.
Monument’s highest finisher in the boys competition was Brydon Whitsitt, who finished 17th in the shot put.
The girls competition saw Grant County flex its muscle in the field events, sweeping the top three places in shot put and discus while having top-three finishers in the javelin, high jump and pole vault.
Leading the Grant Union girls were Mallory Lusco and Morgan Walker, who finished first and second in both the discus and shot put. The girls would alternate finishes in the events, with Lusco placing first in the shot put and second in the discus and Walker placing first in discus and second in shot put.
Grant Union found another event winner in Allyson Moore, who won the high jump. Third-place finishers for the Lady Pros included Alyxandria Schlarbaum in the shot put and Hannah McKinley in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
Prairie City’s lone first-place finisher was Jaylan Duke, in the pole vault. Izabella Williams logged second-place finishes in the javelin and high jump for the Lady Panthers while finishing third in the discus.
The highest finisher for the Monument girls was Ansleigh Douglas, who finished fifth in the 800 meter race.
With the end of the Grant Union Invitational, the teams now look forward to their district meets. Prairie City will join Monument and Dayville for the 1A-SD4 Special District 4 Championships at the Baker Athletic Complex on Friday, May 10.
Long Creek will head to Maupin for the 1A-SD3 Special District 3 Championships at the Deschutes River Athletic Complex on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11.
Grant Union will travel to Hermiston High School for the 2A-SD4 Special District 4 Championships on Saturday, May 11.
The 1A-SD4 Championships are set to start at 10 a.m., with the 1A-SD3 Championships set to start at noon. The 2A-SD4 Championships are scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
