To the Editor:

As a local self-employed business owner in Grant County for the past 50 years, I was surprised and saddened to read the news release in the Blue Mountain Eagle newspaper on June 5, 2024, that we will be losing our print edition and the identity of our Blue Mountain Eagle newspaper, which has been a cornerstone of our local economy and part of our history in Grant County since the late 1800s.

Newspapers generally were created by individuals and other local investors to provide news for citizens in the local area. I do understand that times have changed along with our economy, and that we need to adapt to continue on as most all businesses must do to stay in business.

I suspect that EO Media felt that they could incorporate several news media outlets around the state to build their brand and cut expenses, but it appears that this did not happen, and several communities like ours will continue to be under one umbrella with the loss of our local identity. I suspect that our local editor, reporters and other employees of the newspaper who are an important part of our area must be as disappointed as I am, as well as others, about this announcement.

Maybe it is time for EO Media to consider reaching out to see if someone out there with some newspaper experience might be interested in purchasing a local newspaper, with EO Media providing a centralized printing outlet for them. The sale of some of these holdings might strengthen their bottom line.
