SISTERS — Two 14-year-olds from Sisters died in a dirt bike crash June 12 on a forest road near Skylight Cave, authorities said June 13.

They were part of a four-member group of teens riding dirt bikes in pairs on the Deschutes National Forest on Forest Road 1028, northwest of Sisters. Around 7 p.m. one of the pairs, a boy and a girl, failed to arrive at their destination, said Sgt. Jason Wall, spokesperson for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, in a news release Thursday.

The other pair, a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, searched the area and found the two 14-year-olds seriously injured, Wall said.

They both were wearing motorcycle helmets, he said.

The 15-year-olds began performing life-saving measures, and a passerby helped until deputies arrived to take over. Paramedics arrived shortly after that, Wall said.

The procession of responders continued with detectives, the Oregon State Police for a crash reconstruction and a medical examiner, Wall said. Black Butte Ranch police and the Sisters Fire District responded, too.

Both teens were pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation revealed “speed and variable terrain” were factors in the crash, Wall said.

As is customary, the sheriff’s office declined to release names of any involved because they are juveniles.
