Free lecture on John Day’s historic Chinatown set for July 10

CANYON CITY — Historical archaeologist Chelsea Rose will share findings from five years of research and excavation at the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site in a free public lecture.
Titled “Cobbles, Cures and Cowboys: New Discoveries from the John Day Chinatown Site,” Rose’s talk will take place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Canyon City Community Hall, 131 Washington St.
Rose, director of the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology, will draw on the latest research to introduce her audience to the Chinese community that once thrived in Grant County.
In conjunction with Rose’s lecture, a public archaeology day will be held from noon-3 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Grant County Historical Museum, 101 S. Canyon Blvd. in Canyon City.
