JOHN DAY — The John Day City Council adopted an adjusted budget of $14,689,320 million budget for 2024-25 at its June 25 meeting. The figure is just over $1.2 million higher than the $13.485 million proposal presented to the budget committee in late May.

The council adopted the revised budget by passing four resolutions, although not all of them passed unanimously. At issue was a $100,000 budget allocation to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office to provide dedicated police coverage for the city.

Councilor Dave Holland objected to the $100,000 allocation, saying that the city should not be paying the county extra for services that citizens of John Day are already paying for through property taxes.

The motion to adopt the budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year ultimately passed 4-2, with Holland and Councilor Chris Labhart voting in opposition.

A pair of resolutions to accept state shared revenues and impose a property tax rate of $2.9915 per $1,000 of assessed valuation passed unanimously.

A final resolution authorizing the appropriation of the fiscal year 2024-25 budget passed 5-1, with Holland again voting “no.”
