MILTON-FREEWATER — Detectives with the Oregon State Police are en route to an officer-involved shooting that occurred the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the parking lot of Gib Olinger Elementary School in Milton-Freewater.

Many details — including the circumstances or condition of the shooting victim — were not available.

However, a school district official said the incident was not connected to the school building at 1011 S. Mill St.

As of 8:45 p.m. emergency vehicles from several agencies remained at the scene and officials had blocked off a portion of Southeast Ninth Avenue.

An officer at the scene confirmed it was an officer-involved shooting, but said no other information was available.

Kyle Kennedy, a spokesperson for the Oregon State Police, said, “Our detectives are still on their way to the scene (as of 8:30 p.m.). We will see what we can confirm and put out a press release tonight, but until they arrive, we are in a holding pattern for info release.”

A Milton-Freewater Unified School District official posted on Facebook: “There is currently police activity in the parking lot at Gib Olinger. We want to assure our community that this situation does not involve any students or staff. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates if needed. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
