CANYON CITY — Two people died in a house trailer fire south of Canyon City in the early hours of Saturday, Nov. 30, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The John Day Rural Fire Department and sheriff’s deputies responded about 1:30 a.m. to a reported structure fire on Highway 395 South near milepost 8C, where they found a single-wide trailer fully engulfed in flames, according to the news release.
The fire was reported to emergency dispatchers by a passing motorist who reportedly stopped and tried to gain entry to the residence but was driven back by smoke and flames.
Douglas Kruse, 81, of Canyon City, and his granddaughter, Brittany Davis, 33, of Melba, Idaho, have been tentatively identified as the victims, the news release said, adding that family members have been notified.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office.
