PRAIRIE CITY — The Strawberry Cafe and Bakery in Prairie City wants your posh pups and dapper dogs to have a memorable dining experience right along with you.

The eatery’s “traveling puppy menu” gives your canines the opportunity to do just that. The menu has three dining options for your hungry hounds: the All-Around, which combines fresh-cooked carrots and rice with a protein option of chicken or beef; a small beef patty; and a Pup Cup similar to those offered at coffee and espresso shops.

Craig Powell, the owner of the Strawberry Cafe and Bakery, said the inspiration for the traveling pup menu came from his own experiences traveling with his son’s dog while doing construction work out of town.

“You pack some food with you, but then the dog will eat the food and you have to come up with other options,” he said.

That experience, coupled with visiting restaurants that offered dog-centric menu options during his travels, sparked the idea.

There was evidence within the cafe that suggested the move was a sound idea as well.

“Running the cafe we’ve met a lot of people who have their dogs and they’ll take their leftovers from their plates and say, ‘I’m going to go give this to my dog,’” he said.

Powell said he’s had a number of people ask if the patio next to the cafe would be dog-friendly once it is opened up, which also helped bring the menu into existence.

“We thought, well, gosh, they’re going to be basically customers,” he said. “They’re going to want to eat something with their person sitting there eating, so we thought that would be a great fit.”

Prices start at $4.95 for the All-Around. The small beef patty will set you back $3.25, and the Pup Cup is 50 cents.

Powell said the same fresh and organic ingredients that go into the cafe’s menu items for human customers will be served on the traveling puppy menu as well.

“Same exact meals,” he said. “It’s an organic meal for them, just like it is for the person.”

Powell has a taste tester who has to give his seal of approval for the meals, tapping his dog Prince for the task.

Powell expressed gratitude for the patronage the community has given the cafe during the short time it’s had its doors open.

“We appreciate the business they’ve given us so far, and the feedback,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of positive feedback from folks. A lot of people appreciate what we offer, especially the bakery — they really appreciate the bakery.”
