HERMISTON — An Irrigon woman pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from a 2023 Christmas Day crash that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old boy.
Raileen Erin Cook, 24, pleaded guilty on Dec. 2 in Umatilla County Circuit Court to second-degree manslaughter, two counts of third-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to the court documents.
Senior Judge Christopher Brauer on Thursday, Dec. 5, sentenced Cook to 15 years in the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections with credit for the time she served in the Umatilla County Jail since her arrest March 20. Brauer also revoked her driver’s license for life.
Anthony Jiovanni Guizar, 10, of Hermiston, died due to injuries suffered in a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred Dec. 25, 2023, along Umatilla River Road outside Hermiston.
Emergency agencies responded to a three-vehicle crash. According to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, a southbound 2008 Honda Accord collided with a northbound 1998 Honda Civic. The crash also led to a northbound 2005 Pontiac striking the Civic while attempting to avoid the Accord.
Cook was driving the Accord. Her sons, ages 3 and 5, also were in the car. All three suffered injuries.
Brittni Mendoza, 24, of Hermiston, was driving the Civic and had four passengers: her daughter, 19 months; Mendoza’s sister, Jennika Mendoza, 25, of Hermiston; and her daughter, 6, and son, Anthony, 10.
All occupants suffered significant injuries. Despite receiving medical care at Legacy Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, Anthony succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 30.
Misti Whibeck, 47, also of Hermiston, was driving the Pontiac. She was the only occupant. Police questioned and released her at the scene, with no reported injuries at the time.
