LOS ANGELES — The wildfires ravaging Los Angeles may be the costliest in US history, and firefighters from John Day are assisting in the battle to contain them.

The Oregon Department of Forestry has sent six strike teams to California to assist in battling the blazes. The two teams are split between the Palisades and Eaton fires, with three teams working each fire.

Five people from John Day — Tyler Moodenbaugh, Hannah Deming, Ely Carniglia, Robby Bullock and Matthew Brown — are part of the six ODF crews in Los Angeles. A sixth John Day firefighter, Marnie Woodbury, was initially scheduled to go but didn’t make the trip.

The group from John Day is on a two-week assignment, according to ODF spokesperson Jessica Neujahr, and should be back in John Day around Jan. 24 or 25.

A previous version of this story had somebody other than Ethan Gazen listed as making the trip to Los Angeles with the John Day ODF team. The error has been corrected and the Eagle apologizes for the error.
