Kam Wah Chung to host open house

JOHN DAY — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is hosting an open houser from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on March 19 to share information about the Kam Wah Chung Visitor Center.
OPRD is finalizing construction documents for the new visitors center and will put the project out for bid this fall. Construction on the project will start as soon as spring of 2026.
You’re invited to learn more about the project during the open house at the Kam Wah Chung Interpretive Center, located at 125 NW Canton St. in John Day. “The new visitor center will enhance visitor experience, help preserve the museum collecti0n and provide additional education space,” Eastern District Manager, Kirk Barnham said.
The new visitors center is expected to include expanded interpretive areas, a classroom, which can double as a community space, restrooms, collection processing and archive storage and office space for staff.
The center will open as soon as spring of 2028. OPRD will post information about the visitor impacts on the park webpage and GO Bond page.
