The Grant Union Prospector girls’ bats stayed hot despite chilly weather in their doubleheader home sweep of Weston-McEwen TigerScots Friday, 19-3 and 25-3, ending both in five innings.

Prospector Whitney McClellan had her first and second home runs of the season, hitting a three-run homer in game one, and a one-run homer in game two.

Tiler Voigt also had her first homer for Grant Union, and Brianna Zweygardt also hit a homer, though not her first.

“Everyone was really getting after it at the plate today,” McClellan said. “We used Tuesday’s loss to motivate us to come back better.”

Grant Union had a low-scoring loss to Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii on Tuesday, April 10, falling 2-1 to the Rockets in John Day.

On Friday, Grant Union pitcher Cody Jo Madden held off the TigerScots in the first inning and pitched through the third with Brianna Zweygardt relieving in the fourth and closing out game one.

The Prospectors scored most of their runs early, with five in the bottom of the first.

Grant Union bats were on fire in the second, scoring nine runs.

Hailie Wright and Zweygardt each doubled, then Madi McKrola singled, batting in her teammates.

Grant Union loaded the bases back up and with Shaine Madden at the plate, Weston-McEwen called a timeout to switch pitchers from Jordyn Lambert to Sklyer Walter.

Shaine Madden singled with one RBI, and Macy Strong hit a line drive to center, singling with two RBI.

McClellan hit the ball over the center field fence, for three runs.

Mariah Moulton singled, then Hailie Wright next hit the fence and an outfielder dropped the ball, and Moulton reached home.

By the second inning of game two, Grant Union was up 19-1.

Zweygardt pitched the first three innings.

Mariah Moulton relieved in the fourth, striking out two TigerScots in the inning and first baseman Macy Strong caught the ball for the final out, the score 25-3.

Two TigerScots doubled in the final inning, and scored two more runs, before Moulton ended on a positive note with a strikeout.

“It was a good game,” Moulton said. “Some girls came around with their hitting, and everyone connected with the ball.”

She added, “It was a cold day, but everyone kept their energy up and had fun playing the game.”

Grant Union head coach Zach Williams said his team still has some fundamentals to improve on, but he was pleased overall with his team’s performance.

“They swung at good pitches and played good defense for the most part,” he said.

The Prospectors face the Bulldogs in Nyssa in doubleheader action at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. (MT) on Tuesday, April 17.

Nyssa is ranked No. 19 among OSAA 3A teams with a 4-3 overall record.

Grant Union is No. 3 and 11-1 on the season.
