The Grant Union Prospector softball team has earned the 3A-Special District 2 league title with an 8-0 record.
Grant Union will host district playoff games in John Day on Friday.
Vale plays at 1 p.m., facing the winner of the Tuesday, May 15, game between Nysaa and Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa (played past press time). Grant Union plays the winner of that game, afterward.
Admission for the games is $6 for adults and $4 for students. No passes will be accepted but the gold card.
Grant Union sophomore Taylor Allen’s grand slam on Friday contributed to the Prospector girls’ 2-0 sweep over the Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa Cubs played in John Day with scores of 9-7 and 11-1.
It was Grant Union’s final league doubleheader of the regular season.
Grant Union won game one 9-7, making a comeback after being down in the first three innings.
Prospector Mariah Moulton had a 3-run homer to tie the score 6-6. Hailie Wright followed up with a solo home run for a 1-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, and the team held on for the win.
The Grant Union girls kept a lid on their opponents in game two from the start.
The Prospectors loaded the bases when Wright hit a single, Brianna Zweygardt was hit by a pitch and Cody Jo Madden was walked.
Allen then sent the ball over the center field fence for the grand slam and Grant Union’s first points of the game.
The Cubs only scored off a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
The Prospectors had a 6-0 loss to 2A/1A Union/Cove (ranked No. 5) Wednesday on the road.
Grant Union defeated 3A Echo/Stanfield (previously ranked No. 11) 16-0 in Echo on Saturday in nonleague play.
“I’m excited about the way the girls are playing,” said Grant Union head coach Zach Williams. “It’s good to be hitting well going into the playoffs — pitchers are throwing well and we’re playing good defense. That’s why we scheduled the Echo game, so we could play a good team and get ready for the playoffs.”
After Friday’s 9-7 win over the Cubs, Prospector Reagan Shelley said their team came out with a desire to hit well.
“At practice we worked on it a lot, and it showed at the plate today,” she said.
“Moving on to playoffs is super exciting, and it’ll definitely be a great way to end our senior year,” said teammate Tressa Ranft.
Madden said the team has been playing well as a whole.
“I think staying up in games like these is what will get us wins in post season,” she said.
