June colder than normal

June was colder than normal in John Day, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in John Day averaged colder than normal during the month of June, according to preliminary data received by the National Weather Service in Pendleton.

The average temperature was 58.4 degrees, which was 3.1 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 73.3 degrees, which was 4.3 degrees below normal. The highest was 86 degrees on June 4. Low temperatures averaged 43.4 degrees, which was 2 degrees below normal. The lowest was 34 degrees, on June 1.

Precipitation totaled 1.01 inches during June, which was 0.42 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation was received on seven days with the heaviest, 0.28 inches, reported on June 18.

Precipitation this year has reached 5.46 inches, which is 2.26 inches below normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at John Day has been 8.46 inches, which is 2.84 inches below normal.

The highest wind gust was 41 mph which occurred on June 7.

During the month of June, there were 89 lightning flashes detected in the vicinity of John Day, according to Earth Networks.

The outlook for July from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for near-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation. Normal highs for John Day during July are 88.2 degrees, and normal lows are 49.6 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.60 inches.
