Vet barbecue
JOHN DAY – The American Legion will hold a barbecue for veterans and their families at 6 p.m. March 15 at the American Legion Hall. Hamburgers and buns will be supplied. Bring a side dish. Info: 575-1841.
St. Paddy’s feast
JOHN DAY – A St. Paddy’s Day feast of corned beef and cabbage with all the trimmings will be held at noon on March 16 at Valley View Assisted Living center. Grade school children will perform at 2 p.m. No charge for meal. Info: 575-3533 for reservations.
Farm Bureau meeting
JOHN DAY – The Grant County Farm Bureau will meet at 6 p.m. March 19 at the Outpost Restaurant. The meeting will begin with a no-host dinner. Topics on the agenda include creating a cooperative weed management area, discussing the desirabilty of weed ordinances and a policy for weed management in Grant County. All farmers and ranchers are invited to attend.
Young Continentals in concert
JOHN DAY – The Young Continentals, a church youth group, will perform several songs and dances at 7 p.m. March 20 at the John Day Church of the Nazarene.
Genealogy Society luncheon
JOHN DAY – The Grant County Genealogy Society will host Ruth Harris on March 20 for its luncheon meeting at the Outpost Restaurant. Harris will speak about changes in businesses and buildings along Main Street in John Day.
Babysitting workshop
CANYON CITY – A 4-H special interest babysitting workshop, sponsored by the OSU Extenion Service and Childcare Resource and Referral, is schduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20 at the TEC office conference room. Registration is due by March 23. Registration forms available at the OSU Extension Office in the basement of the courthouse. $10 registration fee. Workshop is open to sixth-grade and up.
First aid, police, fire safety, emergency procedures, child development, parent expectations and other useful childcare information and techniques will be covered.
Solar remodeling
JOHN DAY – Grant County homeowners can apply for a solar architect consultation through the Eastern Oregon Renewable Energies Non-profit (EORenew), the sponsor of SolWest Fair. One home will be chosen as a site for this year’s pre-SolWest workshop. July 25-26 a class of technical students under the direction of a solar architect will analyze the house’s problems and needs, and provide recommended remodel solutions for passive solar heating, improved comfort, and livability. Cans for camp
JOHN DAY – Grant County Young Life is accepting cans and bottles at the Cans for Camp trailer on the lot next to Bit of Europe Antiques.
Young Life is a non-denominational, non-profit organization, committed to making an impact on high school kids’ lives and preparing them for the future. This summer, Young Life will be taking local kids to Malibu Camp in British Columbia. The can drive proceeds will go toward financing the trip. Ongoing Fossil Beds
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.

Long Creek center
LONG CREEK – The community center is available for $10 deposit and a refundable $10 cleaning fee for short gatherings and for $10 deposit and $25 usage fee for longer gatherings (five or more hours).

Prairie City Recycling
