Grant Union golfers tee off at district championships

The Grant Union girls and boys golf teams were hopeful to drive home a winning scorecard at the May 5-7 District Tournament, but fell just short of a trip to state.

The boys competed in the 3A/2A/1A Special District 3, and the girls competed in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4, both teams golfing at the Pendleton Country Club.

As of Tuesday afternoon, with golfers still out on the course, results were not available.

The boys were in fourth place, off by one stroke at last check, said Grant Union head coach Ron Lundbom.

“The kids had fun, and we had great weather.”

“Most had good holes, but were inconsistent in scoring,” Lundbom said. “They would have one or two big number holes, taking eight or nine strokes, and that was their downfall.”

The boys team included Garrett Lenz, Duane Stokes, Maverick Miller, Parker Manitsas and Logan Namitz.

The girls team included Kaytlyn Wells, Emily Springer, Maddy Way and Billy Radinovich.

The top three boys and girls teams will advance to the state championships, and the top five individuals will also compete at state.
