Business Beat: Natural Glow Aesthetics

Debbie Prophet doesn’t want to get under your skin — she wants to help you care for it.

After spending seven years with Cloud 9 Beauty Salon in downtown John Day, Prophet has struck out on her own and started a stand-alone aesthetician service called Natural Glow Aesthetics a few blocks away. The business’s grand opening took place on June 1.

Prophet provides anything and everything you might need to take care of your skin.

“I do waxing — I can wax just about anything that’s on the body,” she said.

“I do skin care. That’s my main goal is taking care of people’s skin. So whether they have acne, rosacea, anything like that, I can take care of that oily skin, dry skin,” she added.

Other services Prophet provides include microdermabrasions, glycolic peels, scalp care and body scrubs.

“I do just about everything … all skin care,” she explained.

Training to become an aesthetician took Prophet seven months, with a trip to Salem for state testing afterward.

“And then that was that,” she said.

Prophet’s motivation for branching out by herself came down to a simple yet crucial aspect of her former workspace at Cloud 9: She didn’t have enough light to work.

“The place I was in over there had no window, so it’s really hard to do stuff in the dark,” she said.

“You have to have really good lighting, and I didn’t have good lighting.”

The drive to get into the skin care business came after Prophet became inquisitive while she was in the middle of getting a facial at a local beauty school.

“I went to get a facial, I went to the school here — they had the school open — and I was asking too many questions, I guess,” she said.

Those questions led to one of the teachers at the school telling Prophet that she should attend the institution.

“She was like, ‘Debbie, just come to school.’ So I thought about it and I did it,” she said.

Prophet said customers shouldn’t be concerned that they won’t receive the same level of care they got when she was working at Cloud 9.

“I’m doing the same thing,” she said. “I just changed buildings.”

Most of her longtime clients know that she’s relocated and branched out on her own, but Prophet said she is still going to use whatever means she can to get the word out.

“I’m going to go to the health fair and hand stuff out and do that so more people will know where I’m at,” she added.

Ultimately, Prophet wants the public to know that if they have any issues with their skin, she can help.

“If you have questions going on with your skin or you want a quick wax, like (for) your eyebrows or lip, just text me. I try to get people in on a whim,” she said.
