In the 20 years I lived in John Day, Ruth Harris (“Remembering Ruth,” Blue Mountain Eagle, May 31, 2023) was a steady force of action. She was a good example for me.
She was an especially accomplished pianist, despite her small fingers. She had to do special stretches to get her thumb and little finger to play an octave. She crossed the street every Sunday and played the organ for the First Christian Church for many years. I was in the choir for a few of those, and boy, did we make some music!
She could play any song you put in front of her. She also played many weddings and funerals there. Looking back, she was about the most talented person in our little community, she and Loreen Alan. They were, if I may say, true Renaissance women.
