Prairie City Panther track team qualifies 4 for state meet

BAKER CITY — The Prairie City track team competed in the 1A Special District 4 track meet on Friday, May 19, in Baker City, earning sixth- and 10th-place team finishes while qualifying five competitors for the state track meet.

The girls team took home a 10th-place team finish and had no qualifiers for the state meet. The team’s highest finisher at the district meet was Madeline McManus, who place fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet, 2 inches.

The boys team placed sixth and qualified four competitors in five separate events. Eli Wright placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.74 seconds, third in the javelin with a throw of 160 feet, 3 inches, and second in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Cole Teel placed third in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 11½ inches. Both Teel and Wright qualified for the state meet in the 4X100 meter relay and will be joined by teammates Tucker Wright and Maison Teel.

The team finished third in the 4X100 relay with a time of 45.69.

The Prairie City girls finished the meet with 19 team points. Ninth-place Cove (25) and eighth-place Four Rivers (27) were separated by just two points. Overall winner Crane finished the meet with 115 team points.

The boys scored 52.5 team points. Fourth-place Joseph had 75.5 team points and fifth-place Cove left the meet with 62 team points. Boys winner Union had 134.5 team points at the meet.

The four Prairie City state qualifiers will head to the OSAA 1A State Championships held on Thursday, May 25, and Friday, May 26, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
