To the Editor:

In order to hire the best person for a job, you look for the most qualified, experienced and skilled person to fill a position. At the Jan. 10 city council meeting, Shannon Adair was that person. As a former city council member, she is knowledgeable and experienced in city issues and current projects. She earned the confidence of 376 voters in the November election, only 19 votes less than her opponent. Three councilors chose to vote for a person with absolutely no experience or background in city issues. The vote was a 3-3 tie, so the position was left vacant at a crucial time with the loss of the city manager and several other staff.

The city of John Day is at a critical crossroads in its economic development. The city council will be confronted with many important decisions in the near future, which include projects in mid-completion and hiring a new city manager. The council needs to have as much expertise on board as possible.

The economic health of the entire county depends on the success of all of its cities. We hope that the councilors will reconsider their vote, and vote for the most qualified candidate at the next meeting.
