PRINEVILLE — A woman was evacuated by helicopter after a rock climbing accident Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Crook County.

The 49-year-old woman was climbing with a man near Ochoco Reservoir north of U.S. Highway 26, according to a news release from the Crook County Sheriff’s Office. While climbing, the woman was hit by a falling rock that knocked her down to a ledge about 8 feet wide situated 30 feet above the valley floor.

Crook County Search and Rescue attempted to rescue the woman first, but was unable due to the rugged terrain. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue rope team was also unable to safely retrieve her. The woman was rescued shortly after 8 p.m. by the Oregon National Guard Medevac helicopter team and transported to St. Charles Bend.

Authorities said the woman is in stable condition, but did not elaborate on what injuries she had sustained.

Her name was not released.
